Sendai through the year

This page separates three kinds of information. What happens every year is a pattern: the seasons and the fixed-date festivals. What is confirmed for 2026 has an official date we checked. What has already happened in 2026 is kept as history, so that its dates are not mistaken for next year’s. The update log at the end says which parts were checked when.

Confirmed for the rest of 2026

Everything in this section was checked against the official pages on 25 October 2026, except the Christmas Market’s ticket details, which were added from the organiser’s pages on 4 November 2026. Follow the event links for the full detail and the organisers’ own last-minute changes.

Autumn evenings: the Rairaikyo light-up

The walkway behind the Akiu Sato Center, along the Rairaikyo gorge, is lit from 24 October to 15 November 2026, 17:00 to 19:30. Entry is free, and every part of the event is cancelled in severe weather; the centre asks visitors to contact it directly when the weather is uncertain (Akiu Sato Center, checked 25 October 2026). Futakuchi: the forest road closes in two stages

Miyagi Prefecture has announced two closures of the Futakuchi forest road (the Miyagi side of the road that links Akiu with Yamagata) (Miyagi Prefecture, posted 21 October 2026, checked 25 October 2026):

• From Monday 26 October 2026, the section from the Banji car park to the prefectural border is closed for bridge construction. There is no through route to Yamagata.
• From Tuesday 1 December 2026, the whole road is closed for winter.

The prefecture will decide when to reopen it after the snow melts and repairs progress, and says it will announce that on its website. It may also close the whole road at any time because of rain or a disaster. The road has no street lights, and the prefecture asks drivers not to use it at night, to keep to 20 km/h, and notes that microbuses and anything larger cannot use it at all. Sendai City’s Akiu Visitor Center carries the same two dates (Akiu Visitor Center, as of 22 October 2026, checked 25 October 2026).

What the notice does not say. It covers the road only. Neither the prefecture’s notice nor the visitor centre’s mentions walking trails, so do not read it as a closure of Futakuchi Gorge’s trails, and do not read it as confirmation that they are open either. Check trail conditions with the visitor centre before you set out on foot.

December on Jozenji-dori and in Nishikicho Park

The SENDAI Pageant of Starlight runs from 4 to 27 December 2026. The 41st edition puts about 480,000 LEDs on 127 zelkova trees along Jozenji-dori, between Sendai Mitsukoshi and Jozenji Garden Hills. Lighting is 18:00 to 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 18:00 to 22:00 on Friday and Saturday; Thursday 24 December also runs to 22:00, and the final night, Sunday 27 December, ends at 21:00. The organiser asks visitors to come by public transport and bans drones (official overview, checked 25 October 2026; organiser announcement dated 15 October, checked 25 October 2026). The overview does not mention an admission fee. See the 2026 Pageant details.

The Sendai Christmas Market runs from 4 to 25 December 2026 in Nishikicho Park: 16:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, 12:00 to 22:00 on Saturdays and 12:00 to 21:00 on Sundays. It is free except on 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 24 and 25 December, when an entry contribution is required. The published advance-ticket options include entry with this year’s mug for ¥1,600, or entry with the mug and a light-up ring for ¥1,900; each ticket is for a two-hour slot chosen when booking, and children of elementary-school age and under enter free with a guardian. Tickets went on sale at 10:00 JST on 4 November 2026 (Sendai Christmas Market, dates checked 25 October 2026, tickets checked 4 November 2026). We did not check how many remain. Every year: the seasonal pattern

This section describes what usually happens. It is a guide to choosing a month, not a forecast for your dates.

Spring: cherry blossom, and why you cannot book it

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced in December 2009 that it would stop issuing cherry blossom forecasts from the following spring, because private weather companies were providing equivalent information, and that it would keep observing the trees (JMA press release, 25 December 2009, checked 25 October 2026).

Those observations show the problem. Sendai’s full bloom was recorded on 4 April in 2026, nine days earlier than the normal date of 13 April, and on 10 April in 2025 (JMA, 2026 full-bloom observations, checked 25 October 2026). That is a record of what happened, not a prediction.

The practical hedge is Tsutsujigaoka Park, which Sendai City puts at about 350 cherry trees of 14 varieties, including weeping types (City of Sendai, checked 25 October 2026). More varieties mean more chances, not a guarantee. Check current park reports before choosing your day; any evening lighting needs that spring’s own announcement.

August: Tanabata

The organising committee holds Tanabata on 6 to 8 August every year (Sendai Tanabata Matsuri organising committee, checked 25 October 2026). That is a standing rule. The programme for a particular year, and the separately organised fireworks, are announced year by year.

The main attraction is the hanging decorations rather than a procession to follow. Individual programmes may have their own timetables. Decorations extend from Sendai Station’s forecourt along the Chuo-dori and Ichibancho arcades; the roofed arcade sections offer some shelter from rain. Historical counts suggest mornings may be quieter than midday, without guaranteeing conditions on a future visit. The organiser’s count for 2025 was 2,107,000 people over the three days, and each day’s count for 09:00 to 10:00 was 17,000 to 18,000, against 69,000 to 80,000 between 12:00 and 13:00 (organising committee, visitor counts, checked 25 October 2026). That is historical crowd information, not a promise about a future morning. The page had not yet published a 2026 count.

The fireworks are a different event, with a different organiser and its own date; the organiser describes them as the eve of the festival. See the history section for the 2026 edition.

Autumn: colour from the gorges to the avenues

Sendai’s official tourism site lists the usual viewing periods, in a feature updated on 16 October 2026 (Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association, checked 25 October 2026):

• Futakuchi Gorge: from mid-October
• Akiu Otaki: end of October
• Rairaikyo: from early November
• Jozenji-dori: mid-November
• Zuihoden: mid to late November

These are usual periods for different places, not a 2026 forecast. The same feature points readers to the prefecture for the Futakuchi forest road, which is covered above. A forecast, a usual period and a dated colour report answer different questions; before a day trip, look for a dated report that names the actual gorge or temple, and check the return transport.

To choose between gorges, start with Naruko Gorge, central Akiu or Yamadera, or compare Akiu and Yamadera in Trip Board. That prefilled board covers Akiu and Yamadera, not Naruko Gorge.

Winter: lights on Jozenji-dori, and Zao’s snow monsters

The Pageant of Starlight is a December fixture, but each year’s dates and hours are announced for that year. The 2026 programme is above; it does not establish dates for any later edition.

SENDAI Bright-Nights STORY is a separate, newer illumination on the same street. Its official site still displays the 19 January–28 February 2026 dates and marks that edition finished. Both the date image and the ended notice were read on 25 October 2026 (official site). A later edition was not confirmed from the official page reviewed for this guide; check the organiser’s current announcements before planning a return visit.

Zao’s snow monsters (juhyo) are weather-dependent formations of snow and ice on the Yamagata side of the mountains. Yamagata’s official tourism site gives a usual viewing period of late December to around mid-February (checked 8 September 2026). When we tried to recheck it on 25 October 2026, the site had suspended access for emergency security maintenance (Yamagata tourism, Zao juhyo).

For 2026–27, the operator’s two notices dated 4 October 2026 publish separate night programmes. Their official flyer calendars were visually read on 25 October 2026: both run on 31 selected dates between 26 December 2026 and 23 February 2027, not every day in that window. Check the highlighted dates in the relevant official calendar before arranging transport.

• Juhyo Light Up: 17:00–21:00 on its selected dates. The last uphill departure from Zao Sanroku Station is 19:45. See the operator’s light-up notice and its 2026–27 calendar flyer (checked 25 October 2026).
• Snow-cruiser Juhyo Illusion Corridor Tour: this is a separate booked package, with departures from Zao Sanroku Station at 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00 on its selected dates. It returns from Juhyo Kogen and does not go to Jizo Sancho Station. Booking opens seven days before the date of use, via the dedicated QR code or website; telephone bookings are not accepted for this snow-cruiser package. Seven days is the opening of the booking window, not a requirement to book at least seven days ahead. These conditions are not a statement that every ropeway visit has the same booking rules. Weather or poor snow-monster formation can cause cancellation, and the formations are not guaranteed to be visible. Remaining places, winter buses and day-of ropeway operation still need a check for the traveller’s date. The older Visit Yamagata reference could not be reopened during this update; use the current operator calendars above rather than carrying an earlier winter’s dates, fares or tour times forward.

History: 2026 events that have ended

These pages stay online as a record. None of them is a recommendation for a current trip, and none of their dates, hours or road closures should be reused for a future edition. No next-edition dates were confirmed from the specific official pages reviewed for this guide on 25 October 2026. Check current organiser announcements before planning a later edition; the Oktoberfest site was unavailable during this review.

• Sendai Tanabata Hanabi (fireworks): the 57th edition was on 5 August 2026, 19:30 to 20:30, with about 16,000 shells around Aobayama Park and the Hirose River, organised by the Sendai Junior Chamber (organiser, checked 25 October 2026). Event record.
• Sendai Tanabata Matsuri: 6 to 8 August 2026. Event record.
• Jozenji Street Jazz Festival: the 35th edition ended on 13 September, after two days from 12 September, with 50 regular performance locations. The organiser reported 730,000 spectators and 870 performing groups (festival report, 20 September and venue release, checked 25 October 2026). Event record.
• Sendai Oktoberfest: ended on 27 September. Its official site was closed for security maintenance when we tried on 25 October 2026, so this entry keeps the 18 September 2026 primary-source check recorded on its event record.
• The Homecoming of BLUE GIANT exhibition: 11 to 30 September 2026 at Sendai Ekimae e-beans. Its separate stamp rally and some tie-in events continue until 31 October 2026 (organiser, checked 25 October 2026). Event record.
• Sendai Classical Festival (Sencla): the 20th edition, 2 to 4 October 2026, with 77 hall concerts and 113 performances in all (festival results, checked 25 October 2026). Event record.
• Michinoku YOSAKOI Festival: the 29th edition, 10 and 11 October 2026, on seven stage venues plus the Jozenji-dori parade on the Sunday (organiser, checked 25 October 2026). Event record.

What we could not confirm

• Two official sites were unavailable on 25 October 2026. Yamagata’s tourism site and the Sendai Oktoberfest site had both suspended access for security maintenance. The facts taken from them keep their earlier check dates.
• One source no longer says what this page used it for. The JMA Morioka page cited before no longer carries the statement about forecasts. It has been replaced by JMA’s own 2009 announcement.
• A later Bright-Nights edition was not confirmed from its official page reviewed on 25 October 2026. Its ended January–February 2026 dates remain visible and were checked, rather than treated as a new winter programme.
• Zao operating conditions. The 2026–27 selected-date calendars above were read from the operator’s flyers, but remaining places, winter buses and day-of ropeway operation need a separate check for the traveller’s date.
• Futakuchi’s trails. The road notices do not address them.
• Tanabata display hours. The checked outline does not give daily display hours for every decoration; do not infer them from the visitor counts.
• Zelkova numbers. The Pageant’s 127 illuminated trees are not a count of every zelkova on Jozenji-dori.

Update log

Edits and fact checks are listed separately. An edit changes the page; a check means the official source was opened on that date. This partial update does not imply that every source on the page was rechecked, so the page’s verified date stays at 8 September 2026.

• 4 November 2026 — partial update. Christmas Market ticket prices, timed entry and the sales opening added from the organiser’s site and ticket notice, checked that day. Nothing else on the page was rechecked.
• 25 October 2026 — edited and partly checked. Reorganised the page into confirmed 2026 dates, the yearly pattern and ended events; moved the September and October festivals to history; added the Futakuchi forest road closures, the Rairaikyo light-up and the Christmas Market; replaced the JMA Morioka source.
