Sendai’s festival calendar gives you dates to build around. Blossom, autumn colour and snow need a more flexible plan. Start with your travel month, then choose the event or destination that fits the time you have.

September-November 2026: choose your next step

The full seasonal source review below is dated 8 September 2026. The September event summary was updated on 18 September 2026, after the jazz festival’s published dates had passed. Each event page links to the organiser for last-minute changes; this partial update does not imply that every seasonal source was rechecked.

• September city break: Jozenji Street Jazz Festival ended on 13 September. For the rest of the month, check Oktoberfest through 27 September or the indoor BLUE GIANT exhibition through 30 September. Oktoberfest’s BLUE TENT admission is ¥500; food, drinks and any refundable drink deposit are separate. Its current stage programme is now linked from our event page.
• October festival trip: choose Sencla on 2-4 October or YOSAKOI on 10-11 October. Use the published venue programme to plan travel between performances.
• Autumn leaves: start with Naruko Gorge, central Akiu or Yamadera. Compare the walking and transport first, then look for a dated colour report near departure. Usual viewing windows do not establish current conditions.

Use events during your visit to check dates, or compare Akiu and Yamadera in Trip Board to build the day. That prefilled board covers Akiu and Yamadera, not Naruko Gorge.

August: Tanabata

The 2026 festival ended on 8 August. The next fixed-rule dates are 6 to 8 August 2027. The organising committee publishes 6-8 August as the rule every year (Sendai Tanabata Matsuri organising committee, checked 8 September 2026). This fixes the festival dates without making any claim about the separately organised fireworks.

It is not a parade. There is no procession and no timetable to catch. Enormous paper streamers hang from the arcade ceilings along Chuo-dori and Ichibancho, and the event is walking underneath them. Two consequences follow: it works in rain, because the arcades are roofed; and it is close to impossible to see calmly in the middle of the day. The official count for 2025 was about 2.11 million people across the three days (organising committee), on a handful of covered streets.

For a less crowded visit, consider the morning: the organiser’s 2025 counts were lower in the first recorded hour than around midday. That is historical crowd information, not a promise about a future visit or the hours of every decoration.

The 2026 fireworks were a separate event. The 57th Sendai Tanabata Hanabi Matsuri ran 19:30 to 20:30 on 5 August 2026, with around 16,000 shells over the Hirose River and the Aobayama area (Sendai Junior Chamber, checked 8 September 2026). Different date, different organiser, different part of the city. This checked page describes 2026, so this guide does not carry its fireworks date forward to 2027.

Spring: blossom, and why you cannot book it

The Japan Meteorological Agency ended its cherry blossom forecasts in 2009 and directs readers to private weather companies for predictions (JMA’s explanation, checked 8 September 2026). It still publishes observations, which are historical records rather than a promise for your next trip.

Its Sendai records make the problem concrete. Full bloom was recorded on 4 April in 2026 and on 10 April in 2025 (JMA cherry blossom observations, checked 8 September 2026). The 2026 observation was nine days earlier than the published normal of 13 April. Observations describe what happened; they cannot guarantee blossom for the dates you book next spring.

The practical hedge is Tsutsujigaoka Park. Sendai City puts it at roughly 350 trees across 14 varieties, including weeping and late-flowering ones (City of Sendai, checked 8 September 2026). Different varieties give you more options than relying on one tree, but check current park reports before choosing your day. Evening lighting dates and hours require that spring’s announcement.

September: jazz on Jozenji-dori

The 2026 edition ended on 13 September. The published programme for the 35th Jozenji Street Jazz Festival covered 12-13 September, with 50 regular performance locations across the city centre (festival venue release, checked 8 September 2026). It provided for rain and admission generally free (official 2026 outline PDF, checked 8 September 2026).

Regular stages were scheduled for 11:00-17:30, with some evening stages until 20:00 and some venues operating on one day only. The official programme release specified road closures around parts of Jozenji-dori from 11:00-21:00 on both days (checked 8 September 2026). The 2026 performer timetable is a record of that edition, not a current travel timetable. Do not carry those stage hours, dates or traffic restrictions into a future trip without a new official announcement.

October: concerts, dance, and the first leaves

Two weekends have firm dates. Sendai Classical Festival runs 2 to 4 October 2026, with 77 short concerts spread across several halls (Sencla organising committee, checked 8 September 2026). The 29th Michinoku YOSAKOI Festival follows on 10 and 11 October, using seven venues; the Jozenji-dori parade is on the Sunday (festival organising committee, checked 8 September 2026). Venue-level schedules can still change, so use the official programme rather than building a route from last year’s timetable.

Neither weekend guarantees city-centre foliage. The official Sendai tourism foliage guide places Futakuchi Gorge from mid-October, Akiu Otaki around late October and Rairaikyo from early November (checked 8 September 2026; the source feature was updated in November 2025). These are usual periods for different locations, not a 2026 forecast or evidence that the waterfall and central Akiu are one stop.

November: the zelkova turn

The same official tourism guide lists Jozenji-dori around mid-November and Zuihoden around mid-to-late November. These usual windows overlap; choose on actual conditions rather than treating one location as a guaranteed fallback a week later.

A forecast, a usual season and a current colour report answer different questions. Before taking an autumn day trip, look for a dated report naming the actual gorge or attraction, and check the return transport. Our autumn day-trip comparison separates those choices from the general calendar here.

Winter: check the year on the lighting announcement

The Pageant organiser is preparing its 2026 edition. Its official homepage says preparations are under way (checked 8 September 2026), but the checked pages did not establish the new lighting dates and hours.

The SENDAI Pageant of Starlight ran its 40th edition from 5 to 28 December 2025, lighting about 480,000 LEDs on 127 zelkova along Jozenji-dori (Pageant of Starlight overview, rechecked 8 September 2026). Although the site header now says 2026, this overview still describes the 40th edition and explicitly refers to 2025. Do not reuse that schedule for the coming winter. A second, newer, city-backed event — SENDAI Bright-Nights STORY — then ran on the same street from 19 January to 28 February 2026 (official site, checked 8 September 2026); that site now says the event has finished.

These are separate events. Preparations for the Pageant do not establish a Bright-Nights return, and a hotel fundraising plan or volunteer recruitment period does not establish public lighting dates. Check the organiser’s next dated announcement before making lights the reason for your trip.

Winter: Zao’s snow monsters

The juhyo are weather-dependent snow and ice formations. The official Yamagata tourism page lists a usual viewing period from late December to around mid-February (checked 8 September 2026). This is not an operating calendar or a promise that the formations will be visible on a particular day.

The Visit Yamagata night-viewing page still describes the 2025-26 season at this check, including that season’s selected lighting days. Do not copy those dates, fares or tour times into a 2026-27 booking. Follow the ropeway link on the official tourism page for current operations, and confirm the return journey as well as the ascent.

What we could not confirm

The checked Tanabata outline did not establish daily display hours for every decoration. Do not infer those hours from the historical visitor counts above.

The Pageant overview counts 127 illuminated trees. That does not establish the total number of zelkova along Jozenji-dori.

The official pages checked on 8 September did not establish the coming season’s Pageant lighting dates, a next Bright-Nights edition, or a 2026-27 Zao night-tour calendar. This is the limit of this check, not a claim that no announcement exists elsewhere. Winter bus services and day-of ropeway operations need a separate check for the traveller’s date.
