Where to stay in Sendai: by the station, near Kokubuncho or at an onsen
Stay within a walk of Sendai Station if your trip includes day trips or an early train, because the JR lines, the Shinkansen, both subway lines and the highway buses all meet there. Choose the Kokubuncho and Jozenji-dori side if your evenings matter more; it is two subway stops away. Treat Akiu or Sakunami as an onsen night, not a base, at 40 to 50 minutes each way. Budget ¥300 per person per night in lodging tax when the room-only rate is ¥6,000 or more before tax.
The short answer
Decide by where each morning starts. If most of them start on a JR platform, sleep near the station. If the trip is the city itself, the Kokubuncho side gives you the evenings. Book an onsen inn for the night you want to do nothing else, and ask it how guests arrive.

| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Around Sendai Station | Day trips, late arrivals and early departures. The JR lines, both subway lines and the covered arcades start here. | The evening district is two subway stops or an arcade walk away. |
| Kokubuncho and Jozenji-dori | Evenings. The tourism association calls Kokubuncho the best-known entertainment district in Tohoku. | Two stops on the Namboku Line from Sendai Station before any day trip can begin. |
| Akiu Onsen | One night built around a bath and dinner at the inn. | About 40 minutes by the Seibu Liner bus or about 50 by the Miyagi Kotsu route bus from Sendai Station, by the tourism association's figures. |
| Sakunami Onsen | An onsen night on a railway line. About 40 minutes on the JR Senzan Line, which carries on to Yamadera. | We have not verified how guests get from Sakunami Station to each inn. Ask yours before you book. |
On this page
In Sendai the choice is less about neighbourhoods than about where each day begins and ends. We did not review or compare individual hotels, and there are no booking links on this page. What follows is the transport and tax side of the decision, from sources opened on 3 October 2026; two transport links were replaced on 4 November 2026 (see the update log).
Start with your mornings
Count the mornings that begin with a train out of the city. The Shinkansen and the JR trains for Yamadera and Matsushima leave from Sendai Station, and neither subway line goes to any of them. If that is most of your mornings, the answer is already the station.
If the trip is mostly Sendai itself, the evenings decide it, and the evenings are at the other end of the arcades.
Around Sendai Station: the practical answer
Sendai Station is where both subway lines cross: it is N10 on the Namboku Line and T07 on the Tozai Line (Sendai City Transportation Bureau, station list, checked 3 October 2026). It is also where six covered shopping arcades begin their run to Jozenji-dori (Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association, checked 3 October 2026).
For buses, the two exits do different jobs. The tourism association’s access notes for Akiu and Sakunami both send you to bus stops at the west exit. JR Bus Tohoku’s highway buses from Tokyo and Shinjuku arrive at the east exit (JR Bus Tohoku, checked 4 November 2026).
Choose this when you arrive late, leave early, or have day trips on the plan. For how the city’s transport fits together, see getting around Sendai; for the airport train, see Sendai Airport train fares and journey times.
Kokubuncho and Jozenji-dori: the evening answer
The tourism association describes Kokubuncho as famous as the foremost entertainment district in Tohoku, running along the old Oshu Kaido road past Jozenji-dori (Sendai Tourism, Kokubuncho, checked 3 October 2026). Jozenji-dori itself, the tree-lined avenue, is directly outside Kotodai-Koen Station on the Namboku Line, which the same association gives as two stops from Sendai Station (Sendai Tourism, Jozenji-dori, checked 3 October 2026). The stop in between is Hirose-dori.
Choose this when dinner and what comes after it are the point of the trip, and you are happy to add two subway stops, or a walk through the arcades, to the start of every excursion.
Think twice when you have a train before eight. We did not check first-train times on the subway.
Akiu and Sakunami: an onsen night
Both are inside the city and both are a real journey from the station.
Akiu Onsen. The tourism association gives about 40 minutes from JR Sendai Station on the Takeya Kotsu Sendai Seibu Liner, about 50 minutes on Miyagi Kotsu’s Akiu Line route bus, and about 15 minutes on a Sendai City Bus from JR Ayashi Station if you take the train part of the way (Sendai Tourism, Akiu Onsen, checked 3 October 2026). We did not recheck the Akiu bus fare for this page; the Akiu route page shows the last figure we verified and its date.
Sakunami Onsen. About 40 minutes on the JR Senzan Line from Sendai Station to Sakunami Station, or about 50 minutes by Sendai City Bus from the west exit (Sendai Tourism, Sakunami Onsen, checked 3 October 2026). In JR East’s November timetable, the 07:14 local from Sendai reaches Sakunami at 07:54 (JR East, train 823M, checked 4 November 2026). JR East replaces these train pages every month, so for a later date start from its Sendai Station timetable. What the association’s page does not say is how you get from the station to an inn, and we have not verified that for any property.
Choose an onsen night when the bath and the dinner are the plan for that evening. Do not choose one as a base for several days of sightseeing in the city: the ride back in comes out of every morning.
The lodging tax
Since 13 January 2026, lodging in the city of Sendai carries an accommodation tax of ¥300 per person per night, charged when the room-only rate is ¥6,000 or more per person per night before consumption tax. The city’s page breaks it down as ¥200 for Sendai and ¥100 for Miyagi Prefecture (City of Sendai, checked 3 October 2026).
Two practical points follow from that wording. The threshold is measured on the room-only price before tax, not on a price that includes meals. And the tax is per person, so where it applies, two people for three nights is ¥1,800. Ask the property whether its quoted price already includes it.
What we did not check
- Hotels. No property, price or availability was checked, and nothing here is a recommendation of one.
- Inn shuttles. Whether an Akiu or Sakunami inn collects guests, and from where, is a question for the inn.
- The current Akiu bus fare. See the note above.
- Staying in Matsushima. It is a reasonable alternative for one night and we have not researched it; the Matsushima route page covers getting there.
Once you have a base, day trips from Sendai helps choose where to go from it, and the Trip Board holds the plan.
Update log
- 4 November 2026 — two links replaced. The JR Bus Tohoku page and the October JR East train page cited here had stopped working. The east-exit arrival and the 07:14 Sendai to Sakunami train were rechecked on their current official pages, and a link to the Sendai Station timetable was added. Nothing else was rechecked, so the page’s verified date stays at 3 October 2026.
- 3 October 2026 — published. Every section checked on that date.
