Tokyo to Sendai: Hayabusa, Yamabiko or the highway bus
Take the Hayabusa unless you have a reason not to. It took about an hour and a half and cost ¥11,630 in an ordinary reserved seat on the regular-season Saturday we checked, and every seat on it is reserved. The Yamabiko was about 15 to 25 minutes slower, ¥320 cheaper reserved and ¥850 cheaper in an unreserved car. The highway bus starts at ¥3,000 and takes most of a working day. A JR East Pass does not pay for itself on a Tokyo–Sendai return alone.
The short answer
For a straightforward trip, book a Hayabusa seat and budget two single tickets, because the round-trip discount no longer exists. Choose the Yamabiko when you want to walk up without a booking, the bus when the fare matters more than the day, and the pass only when Sendai is one stop on a longer route.

| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hayabusa | The default. 1 h 30 to 1 h 31 min in the two services we checked, ¥11,630 in an ordinary reserved seat. | Reserved seats only. There is no unreserved car to fall back on if the train you wanted is full. |
| Yamabiko | Walking up without a booking. It has unreserved cars at ¥10,780; a reserved seat was ¥11,310. | 1 h 46 to 1 h 56 min in the three services we checked, so the saving of ¥320 to ¥850 costs 15 to 25 minutes. |
| JR Bus Tohoku highway bus | The lowest fare. From ¥3,000 one way, by day or overnight, from Busta Shinjuku or Tokyo Station. | About 5 h 35 to 5 h 48 min by day. Several services run on specified dates only, every seat must be reserved, and the fare varies by date. |
| JR East Pass | A trip that carries on north or strings several Shinkansen legs into five consecutive days. | ¥35,000 for five days. A Tokyo–Sendai Hayabusa return is ¥23,260, so the pass loses on that journey alone. |
On this page
The Tohoku Shinkansen runs between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, with Sendai on the way (JR East route guide, checked 3 October 2026). There are two trains worth knowing about and one bus. Everything below was read from the operators’ own pages on 3 October 2026, except the highway bus section, which was rewritten from the operator’s November timetable on 4 November 2026. Where a number depends on the date you travel, we say which date we looked at.
What it costs
We searched JR East’s own reservation site for one adult, Tokyo to Sendai, on Saturday 17 October 2026, a regular-season date (JR-EAST Train Reservation, checked 3 October 2026).
- Hayabusa, ordinary reserved seat: ¥11,630
- Hayabusa, Green Car: ¥15,290
- Hayabusa, GranClass: ¥22,290
- Yamabiko, ordinary reserved seat: ¥11,310
- Yamabiko, unreserved: ¥10,780
- Yamabiko, Green Car: ¥14,970
Those totals are a fare plus an express charge. The fare part is ¥6,270 with a paper ticket: JR East’s revised table, in force since 14 March 2026, lists Tokyo and Ueno to Sendai in the 341–360 km band (JR East fare revision pamphlet, checked 3 October 2026). The same pamphlet says express and Green charges were not revised, so this year’s revision changed the fare part only.
Two things changed in March that older articles miss. Round-trip tickets were withdrawn after 13 March 2026, and the round-trip discount went with them. A return is now simply two singles: ¥23,260 on the Hayabusa at the price above.
The reserved-seat charge also moves with the calendar. JR East adds ¥400 in its peak season and ¥200 in its busy season, and takes ¥200 off in the off-peak season. On its 2026 calendar for JR East lines the peak dates are 1 to 6 January, 27 April to 6 May, 10 to 19 August and 28 to 31 December (JR East, seasonal reserved-seat charges, checked 3 October 2026). An unreserved seat is the regular-season reserved charge less ¥530, which is exactly the gap in the Yamabiko prices above (JR East, limited express tickets, checked 3 October 2026).
How long it takes
On the morning we searched, the reservation site showed these departures from Tokyo:
- Yamabiko 129: Tokyo 09:00, Sendai 10:56. 1 h 56 min.
- Hayabusa 9: Tokyo 09:08, Sendai 10:39. 1 h 31 min.
- Yamabiko 131: Tokyo 09:24, Sendai 11:10. 1 h 46 min.
- Hayabusa 11: Tokyo 09:36, Sendai 11:06. 1 h 30 min.
- Yamabiko 55: Tokyo 09:40, Sendai 11:34. 1 h 54 min.
That is a sample of five trains on one morning, not a timetable. It is enough to show the pattern: the Hayabusa that leaves eight minutes after a Yamabiko arrives seventeen minutes before it. Check the actual departure for your date.
Booking
JR East’s reservation site works in English and several other languages and sells both trains. When we looked on 3 October, its date picker offered travel dates up to 3 November, one month ahead.
The Hayabusa is reserved seats only, so the decision is made when you book. If you would rather not commit to a train, the Yamabiko’s unreserved cars are the honest fallback: slower, cheaper, and no booking to miss.
The JR East Pass
JR East now sells a single JR East Pass covering its whole network, at ¥35,000 for five consecutive days or ¥50,000 for ten, with children aged 6 to 11 at half price (JR East Pass, checked 3 October 2026). The address of the older “Tohoku area” pass page now redirects there, so treat any lower price you find for a Tohoku-only pass as describing a product that page no longer offers.
The pass is not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and Green Car or GranClass seats cost extra. It does cover the Sendai Airport line.
The arithmetic is simple. A Hayabusa return between Tokyo and Sendai came to ¥23,260 on our date, well short of ¥35,000. JR East’s own example of a trip the pass suits is the Narita Express into Tokyo plus Tokyo–Sendai and Sendai–Shin-Aomori in reserved seats, which it prices at about ¥52,000. That is the shape of trip to buy it for: Sendai as one stop, not the destination.
For tickets that only cover the Sendai area, see Sendai transit passes compared. They are different products and none of them reaches Tokyo.
The highway bus
JR Bus Tohoku runs daytime and overnight buses from the Tokyo area to Sendai Station’s east exit. Every seat must be reserved. The facts below come from its timetable and fares page for services from 1 November 2026 (JR Bus Tohoku, Tokyo area to Sendai, checked 4 November 2026). The page we cited before no longer exists.
Not every bus runs every day. The timetable marks each service as running daily or on specified dates only, and the page does not list which dates those are. Search your own date on a booking site before planning around one.
Daytime, about 5 h 35 to 5 h 48 min:
- Busta Shinjuku 07:00, Sendai 12:45. Specified dates only.
- Tokyo Station Yaesu south exit 07:30, Sendai 13:05. Specified dates only.
- Tokyo Station Yaesu south exit 11:50, Sendai 17:25. Specified dates only.
- Busta Shinjuku 13:00, Sendai 18:48. Daily.
- Busta Shinjuku 14:50, Sendai 20:35. Daily.
- Busta Shinjuku 16:30, Sendai 22:15. Specified dates only.
Overnight, arriving between 05:32 and 05:51:
- Daily: Busta Shinjuku 23:20, calling at Omiya 00:15; Busta Shinjuku 23:50; Tokyo Station 23:40, a bus that starts at Narita Airport and Tokyo Disneyland.
- Specified dates only: two buses from Tokyo Station at 23:50.
Two of the overnight buses also start in Yokohama. The operator’s notice moves that stop to YCAT from 1 November 2026, and one copy of the notice still marks the move as awaiting approval, so check the boarding point when you book.
There is no single fare. The page gives the adult one-way fare as “from ¥3,000” and says it differs by operating date. Its online fares also change by sale date and by service after sales open, and the operator neither charges nor refunds the difference if the fare moves after you buy. Early-booking discounts are not offered on every date. Children’s fares are half the adult fare. Check the price for your date and bus on the booking page; we have not quoted a fare for any particular date.
You can book online, by phone or at 7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart or Ministop stores. Paying on board, in cash for a one-way trip, is possible only when seats are left. For the trip back, the operator’s Sendai to Tokyo area page also mixes daily and specified-date services.
Choose the bus when the fare gap matters more than five or six hours of your day, or when an overnight ride saves a hotel night you did not want.
Luggage
JR East’s luggage guide is plain: no charge and no reservation for a suitcase within the size limits, which are 250 cm in combined dimensions, 2 m in length, 30 kg per piece and two pieces per person. Use the racks, the space at your feet, or the luggage area (JR East luggage guide, checked 3 October 2026).
When you arrive
Sendai Station is also where the subway lines cross and where the airport train ends. Getting around Sendai covers the city, where to stay in Sendai covers which side of it to sleep on, and day trips from Sendai covers what leaves from the same station the next morning.
What we did not check
- The nationwide Japan Rail Pass. We did not verify its current price or conditions and make no claim about it here.
- Advance-purchase discounts. JR East advertises online-only discount fares. We looked only at the standard prices above.
- Other bus companies. Several operate this route. Only JR Bus Tohoku’s page was opened.
- Boarding at Ueno or Omiya. The fare table groups Ueno with Tokyo for Sendai, but we did not check which services stop where.
- Peak dates. Our prices are for one regular-season Saturday. Around New Year, Golden Week and mid-August, expect the reserved charge to be higher and seats to be harder to find.
- Which dates the specified-date buses run. The operator’s timetable page does not list them, and we did not search individual dates.
Update log
- 4 November 2026 — highway bus section rewritten. The cited JR Bus Tohoku page had been removed and its timetable ended on 31 October. Times, running days, stops and fare rules were rechecked on the operator’s November page; the comparison table row was updated to match. The Shinkansen, pass and luggage sections were not rechecked, so the page’s verified date stays at 3 October 2026.
- 3 October 2026 — published. Every section checked on that date.
